Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis
Juvenile arthritis is arthritis that affects children.
It causes
inflammation of the joints, pain, stiffness and loss of movement. It can affect
any joint, but it is more common in the knees, hands and feet. In some cases it
can also affect the internal organs.
The most common type of juvenile arthritis in children is juvenile
idiopathic arthritis. There are several other forms of arthritis that affect
children.
An early sign of juvenile arthritis may be limping in the mornings.
Symptoms may appear and disappear. Some children have only one or two crises.
Others have symptoms that do not go away. Juvenile arthritis can cause growth
problems and ocular inflammation in some children.
It is not known exactly what causes juvenile arthritis. Most types are
autoimmune disorders. This means that your immune system, which normally helps
your body to fight infections, attacks the tissues themselves.
