THE IDEAL WEIGHT OF THE
BABY
Your baby's weight at
birth is the weight you take immediately after you have been born. A small baby
is considered to weigh less than 2.5 kg (5.5 lbs) and a large baby of more than
4 kg (8.8 lbs).
A low-weight baby may
indicate that it is too small, that it was born early (premature) or both. This
may be due to many causes; For example, mother's health problems, genetic
factors, problems with the placenta, or that the mother has abused substances
during pregnancy.
Some low-weight babies
may be at risk for some health problems. Some can get sick or develop
infections in the first few days of life. Others may suffer long-term problems
such as delay in motor or social development or learning problems.
